Run Microsoft Update

Page Goals
  • Upgrade your computer from Windows Update to Microsoft Update
  • Run a Microsoft Update "Custom" scan, and install all items in all 3 categories
  • Reboot your computer and re-run the update scan until no items are found

Making sure your computer has the latest windows updates installed is absolutely critical. Most major viruses nowadays such as Blaster and Welchia spread through vulnerabilities in Windows. The frustrating thing is that the vulnerabilities almost always already have a patch out by the time the virus hits. If everyone had windows updates installed when blaster hit, no one would have gotten it.

Swapping to Microsoft Update (From Windows Update)

To run Microsoft Update, open up Internet Explorer, click the "Tools" menu, then click "Windows Update".

When you go to the site, the top left corner of the web page will either say "Windows Update" or "Microsoft Update". "Microsoft Update" is a newer, better version of "Windows Update". If it says "Windows Update", you should click the link in the center of the page near the top that says "Microsoft Update", and install the Microsoft Update components. This will make it so you always redirect to Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update.

Note that sometimes the "Microsoft Update" link cannot be seen due to frame issues. If the top left says Windows Update, but you dont see a link for Microsoft Update in the center near the top, Click Here using Internet Explorer and you will be brought to the Microsoft Update component install.

Running the Update

Once the page loads, walk through the steps. If it is your first time, it may walk you through installing a few items to allow Microsoft Updates to work properly.

"Custom" Version

At one point in the process it will ask you if you want the "custom" or "express" version of the site. You should click the "Custom" button, as it will give you the ability to install all the updates.

The actual scan for updates may take a while, and appear to be "frozen" on a loop. Let the scan continue.

Select all updates in all 3 categories

Once Microsoft Update scans your computer for needed updates, it will list them all under 3 separate categories: "High Priority", "Software, Optional", and "Hardware, Optional". You can swap between the three categories by clicking their names in the column on the left. The items in the "High Priority" category will all be selected, but you will have to manually select any and all items listed in the other two "optional" categories.

Install Updates

Once all the updates are selected under all 3 categories, click "Review and Install updates" at the top, then click the button to install the updates. You may have to accept a license agreement before the install completes.

Reboot and Re-Scan

After the updates are installed, it may ask you to reboot the computer. After the install is done (and a reboot if required) make sure you go to the Microsoft Updates site again and re-scan to see if any other updates appear (sometimes one update is dependant on another being installed). Keep rebooting and returning to the site until a scan reveals no needed updates in any of the three categories.

Progress Tracker Update
(Click the checkbox and click next to update the progress checklist)
I have swapped to Microsoft Update and my last Microsoft Update scan told me there were no items to install
