Firefox

Page Goals
  • Install Firefox Web Browser
  • Set Firefox as your default web browser
  • Import Bookmarks/Favorites from Internet Explorer
  • Set up tabbed browsing and learn how to use it

You are not using Firefox. You should upgrade to using Firefox by following the instructions below!
How do I know what browser you are using?

Internet Explorer takes up a lot of resources. It is slow, can easily become infested with Spyware, and is not easily customizable. Because of this, I recommend you use Firefox as your primary web browser. Millions of people are making the switch from IE to Firefox, and for good reasons.

How do I install Firefox?

To install Firefox, go to the Firefox Home Page and click the "Download Firefox" link. Click open or run when prompted, and go through the Firefox Installation.

Once Firefox is installed, run it from the desktop or start menu (or check the last step of the installation which should be to run firefox).

Default Browser

If, when you open Firefox, it asks you if you want firefox to be the default browser, click "yes". If it doesn't, click "tools" then "Options". Click "General" on the left and click the button under "default browser" (on the right) that says "Check Now". You should also re-open Internet Explorer and see if it bugs you about not being the default browser. If it does, tell it not to check again and say no.

Re-Add IE to start menu

Setting Firefox as the default browser will replace IE with Firefox on your start menu. To re-add IE, go to the start menu, then (all) programs, and right click on the Internet Explorer icon and click "pin to start menu".

Import Bookmarks

If Firefox does not ask you about importing your bookmarks, or you want to re-import them, click File->Import from the Firefox Web Browser.

Tabbed Browsing

One of the great things about Firefox is the ability to do tabbed browsing, meaning you don't need multiple windows all opened at the same time, you can have all the pages in the same window, but different tabs.

Go to the tools menu on Firefox and click Options. Click "Tabs" on the top. UNcheck the check box that says "Hide tab bar when only one web site is open". Set "Open links from other applications in" to "new tab in most recent window". Check the box that says "Force links that open new windows to open in", and select "a new tab". Now click ok and close and re-open Firefox.

Opening in new tab

Now, when you are at one page and want to go to another page without closing the first, you can press ctrl-T and a new tab will pop open. If you are on a page and want a link on that page to open in a new tab, middle click on the tab. You can also middle click on a bookmark to have it open in a new tab.

Keyboard Shortcuts

This page has a downloadable list of 70+ useful keyboard shortcuts. The one I use the most is ctrl-enter, which adds "http://www." on the front and ".com" at the end of what you typed in the address bar (so you type google then press ctrl-enter)
