Install Anti Spyware

Page Goals
  • Install the latest version of Windows Defender (Formerly Microsoft AntiSpyware)
  • Configure Windows Defender to remove spyware on sight
  • Run an Initial spyware scan and remove any existing spyware
  • Learn what to do when a future nightly or real time scan discovers spyware
IMPORTANT NOTE!

If you installed Microsoft AntiSpyware in the past year, you should update it to Windows Defender. If you are not sure which version you have installed, click Start->(All) Programs and look for "Windows Defender" (it has a gray castle wall icon). If you dont see this icon, you should install per the instructions below.

Why Windows Defender?

There are a number of anti-spyware products out there. There are also a number of bad ones, ones that install more spyware. Because of this, I am only recommending you keep the 3 I know to work well. I used to use Ad-Aware and Spybot, as they are very good at removing spyware if you know how to use them. If you have them installed, by all means keep using them. The problem with these two programs is that based on the default installation, you do not get any sort of on-going, automated spyware prevention. You have to manually run scans to get it to work. It is for this reason that I primarily suggest and install Windows Defender. It is currently in Beta Mode (testing), but is very good even for Beta. Bill Gates has announced a while back that when it goes to regular release, it will be free, a very good decision by Microsoft.

Windows Defender Beta provides the following, Free:

  • Automatic Real-Time scan protection
  • Automatic Updating on a regular schedule
  • Automatic Nightly Scans for spyware
  • "System Explorers" for manual threat removal
  • Automatically allows known Good programs
  • Automatically Blocks known Bad programs
  • Asks you on any software it is unsure of

Windows Defender works on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Click Here if you missed the page on upgrading to Windows XP. If you are stuck with a version of Windows pre-xp, Spybot is your best option.

Installing Windows Defender

Go to the Windows Defender download page and click on the "Download It Here".

NOTE: If the microsoft website does not open (it may say something like dns error or another error), your "Hosts File" may be corrupted by a virus. Simply scroll down and click "Next >> Hosts File", scroll down to "The Emergency Way" and run those instructions, then come back here and re-try the above link.

Validate Windows

You will probably be asked to validate your "Genuine Windows". Do this by clicking the continue button and installing the validator.

After validation, click the download button and the download process will begin. Choose to "Run" or "open" the file whenever asked.

Installation Process

Accept all default options during the installation, one option will give you three options but does not have any checked by default. Select the top option and continue. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE FINAL CHECKBOX which updates Windows Defender and runs a scan.

If Windows Defender finds any spyware, be sure to tell it to remove the spyware.

Configure Windows Defender

Once the scan is complete, and any spyware found is removed, click "Tools" at the top, then click "Options". Make sure "Automatically Scan" is checked, and it is set to "Daily" and at a time your computer is turned on. Check the two checkboxes that say "Check for Updated Definitons before scanning", and "Apply default actions to items during scan".

Under "Default Actions" change ALL the options to "Remove", and make sure the "Use Realtime Protection" is checked.

Progress Tracker Update
(Click the checkbox and click next to update the progress checklist)
I have installed Windows Defender and ran a Scan. I have also set the options as explained above.

Next >> Start at the Beginning and go through all the steps!
